- • Oncology nurses play an essential role on the health care team. They have specialized knowledge and skill in
- giving chemotherapy and in meeting the special needs of cancer patients. They may specialize even further, as
- radiation oncology nurses, for example ( see "The Oncology Nurse" ).
- • Radiology technologists perform the diagnostic x-ray tests and operate the equipment under the supervision of
- the diagnostic radiologist .
- • Nuclear medicine technologists administer the radioactive isotopes and operate the machines that perform
- nuclear scans of organs such as bone and liver.
- • Radiotherapy technologists, also called radiographers, administer the actual radiotherapy treatments under the
- supervision of the radiation oncologists. They assure that the radiation treatments are given to the exact part of
- the body designated by the radiation oncologist, and they will be observing you with TV monitors or through
- special glass windows while you are receiving the radiation treatment.
